Congratulations, Senior Design Team

Congratulations to our biomedical engineering senior design team on tying for First Place at CSU’s E-Days on Thursday, April 12.

Every year, CSU hosts E-Days, where senior undergraduate engineering students can showcase their senior design projects. This is the third year the Henry Group has hosted a senior design team from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, where students help further one of our many projects. This year’s group designed and fabricated a solar-powered device that fully automates all the steps of one of our complex biological assays for bacteria detection at the push of a button. Additionally, they programmed a Raspberry Pi to automatically calculate the bacteria concentration in the sample based on an image the Pi obtains and analyzes the image’s color intensity.

Congratulations, team!

Cody named VPR Fellow

Cody recently took part in a CSU challenge to present his research in a flash 3 minute presentation, to a panel of judges and using only 1 slide. Happily, he nailed it and has been awarded a Vice President for Research (VRP) Fellowship for his performance, which includes a scholarship and travel support to attend conferences.

You can check out his talk on “Delivering Bacterial Detection to the Point of Need” below, or read the full article full article on the College of Natural Sciences website.

Spares for Point-of-Care

With Kentaro sadly leaving us next week, the Henry and Kean research Groups went bowling after work to commemorate his time in the Group. Kentaro captained a seniors team (Kentaro, Rob, Mike and Kat) and was very pleased to score 160 and get a team victory over the youngsters (Melissa, Alyssa, Zach and Cody).

Scientists on Ice

To keep in spirit with the Winter Olympics, Henry Group members past and present have been taking part in a recreational curling league in Fort Collins. The team is skippered by Cody, and the league has even made local news.

Whiskey paper wins award

Our recent paper by visiting student Thiago Cardoso on the colorimetric detection of falsified whiskey has won a Brazilian science award.

The work in collaboration with Wendell Coltro (Universidade Federal de Goiás) won 5th place in the “exact sciences and the earth” category, from the SBPC (Brazilian Society for Science Progress) Goiás regional awards. These honors are awarded to the best studies which help the community, and to demonstrate that science can help common people in their day-to-day lives.

Goodbye Camila

We are very sad to see Camila Proença leave to return to the Bioanalytical and Electroanalytical Laboratory at the Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil.

Fortunately, her time here was very productive and we look forward to writing up the publications on all the excellent research she carried out during her stay.
